While Typhoon’s epic debut album Hunger and Thirst somehow managed to fly under the radar (it was even named #5 on Amazon MP3′s Outstanding 2010 Albums You Might Have Missed) their brand new EP A New Kind Of House will surely launch Typhoon into the indie spotlight. With many appearances lined-up for this years SXSW Music Fest Paste Magazine has named Typhoon one of it’s 20 SXSW Bands You Might Not Know (But Should). We couldn’t agree more and can’t wait to see them at our annual Opening Day Bash!

Paste placed them at #18 and had the following to say:

“Music critics throw around adjectives like “orchestral” and “expansive” all the time these days. Now here’s a band that actually deserves such labels. Portland’s Typhoon is an indie rock geek’s dream: a dynamic 12-piece with a seemingly unending reservoir of energy, emotive vocals, arpeggiated guitars, horns, multiple drum kits, strings—there are so many sonic details crammed into the five tracks on A New Kind of House, the band’s second official release, that you might need two pairs of headphones to properly connect the dots. —Ryan Reed”

More On This Album

After a string of head-turning, critically acclaimed releases on Hush Records, Portland’s Loch Lomond has brought their unique brand of raw symphonic chamber pop to Tender Loving Empire. Loch Lomond has slated their much anticipated second full length Little Me Will Start a Storm for release on Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011. The album was mixed by Adam Selzer (who has recorded all of M Ward’s records), Tucker Martine (Laura Veirs, The Decemberists), and Kevin Robinson (of Viva Voce). Employing notable visceral and expert melodic acrobatics, the co-ed sextet of Loch Lomond distinctly incorporates the use of harmonic vocals, mandolin, theremin, bass clarinet, and all manner of exclamatory percussion minutia to foil the even more distinct and arresting voice of lead singer/multi-instrumentalist Ritchie Young.

The Bewitched Hands Release New EP

March 8, 2011 by admin

Artist: The Bewitched Hands
Title: Work – EP
Label: IODA
Genre: Rock : Pop
UPC: 847108076151
Territory: United States, Canada
Release Date: 03.08.11

One of the artists we are particularly excited to see at our annual IODA Opening Day Bash at SXSW has to be Reims, France’s The Bewitched Hands. Originally formed as a side-project, the group has caused a real stir with their brand of catchy melodic pop where psychedelic vocal harmonies crossover with folk. They strike an incredibly precise balance between late-60’s early-70’s sunshine psych and modern day indie rock, with touches of electro champagne. Their new 3 song EP, entitled Work, comes out today!

“The Bewitched Hands’ music is one of those pretty secrets that pop lovers listen to non-stop when they’re on their own, until they spit it to the world’s face as if it were a miracle solution to salvage the declining record industry and trigger countless orgasms.”

Dan Willson’s songwriting is the result of a long and personal journey, filled with ups and downs, which lead him to the acclaimed set of songs on his debut record Good News. Under the moniker Withered Hand, Willson crafted a landmark recording of quality songsmanship which walks the fine line between frailty and strength with nimble grace. The album was released in the UK in late 2009 and without any coordinated publicity or promotional effort, yet it managed to find acclaim in multiple outlets. MOJO magazine gave it a prominent 4 star review only months after its release and the record eventually achieved regular BBC airplay from prominent DJ’s, leading to live session performances for BBC Radio Scotland and BBC 6Music. The band has garnered public endorsements from Jarvis Cocker, The Dodos, and fellow Scots, Frightened Rabbit, whose frontman Scott Hutchinson is planning to take Withered Hand as their primary support on an upcoming US tour. In the last year Withered Hand has enjoyed a highly successful European tour with sold out shows in London and Scotland and numerous festival invitations. All this fuss over a debut album was really something to talk about, and it was only a matter of time before Absolutely Kosher picked the record up to release in the western hemisphere. Now, for the first time in the US, Good News is available, and destined for further acclaim.

More On This Album

Gold Panda usually takes his time, trafficking in expertly paced mid-tempo hip-hop beats and lush, synthetic/organic textures; so when the UK producer nods towards the dancefloor, the effects are exhilarating. “Snow & Taxis,” the first official single from Gold Panda’s multi-faceted debut Lucky Shiner, is one of the record’s tantalizingly few genuine club-leaning moments, a 4/4 symphony of pinging bells and sugar-sweetened strings. The track’s tone is hopeful yet melancholy, every bit as poignant as its namesake wintertime cab ride. It’s not an easy feat, but Gold Panda makes “Snow & Taxis” sound like the act of heading home.

IODA SXSW Opening Day Bash Sampler 2011Beach Fossils
“What a Pleasure” (mp3)
from What a Pleasure (Captured Tracks)

More On This Album

Following the critically acclaimed self-titled debut, Beach Fossils returns with the beautifully crafted EP, What a Pleasure. In this brilliant new release Dustin Payseur shares songwriting duties with bassist John Peña which makes for their most dynamic songs yet. Also, on the “Out in the Way” Payseur teams up with the talented Jack Tatum of Wild Nothing for a song that reveals both artists’ visions in a way that the world has yet to hear. “What a Pleasure” is full of clean, simple guitar lines that build up to melancholic endings. The mature sound and cleaner production value on “What a Pleasure” presents glimpses of where Beach Fossils have been and where they aim to go.
