Portland indie orchestra Typhoon turned many a critical head in 2010 after releasing their epic LP Hunger and Thirst on Tender Loving Empire. They were named as one of Portland’s best new bands by Willamette week, toured in support of Yann Tiersen, and opened for Belle & Sebastian and Avi Buffalo. A New Kind of House is Typhoon’s sequel to Hunger and Thirst. With these five multi-movement song cycles, A New Kind of House is far more than an EP. This fully realized recording finds the now 12-piece ensemble at the height of their powers. For those of us craving more after Hunger and Thirst this EP is the perfect thing to satisfy that craving. Picking up right where Hunger and Thirst left off A New Kind of House is equal parts beautiful, enrapturing and exciting!
With dates already confirmed this year at the Noise Pop and SXSW festivals, 2011 holds great things for Typhoon. While Hunger and Thirst somehow managed to fly under the radar (it was even named #5 on Amazon MP3′s Outstanding 2010 Albums You Might Have Missed) A New Kind Of House will surely launch Typhoon into the indie spotlight. With a firm 12 touring members the real question is: how will they all fit into the spotlight? After having the pleasure of catching Typhoon at one of my favorite small venues in SF, I’m sure they’ll figure out a way to fit and to do it gracefully.
If you haven’t already grabbed Hunger and Thirst in it’s entirety here’s the lead track:
